Sermon Notes: The Character of Truth
Primary Text: Ephesians 4:25
“Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.”
Main Theme
God’s character is truth. As believers, we are called to live, speak, and walk in truth. Truth does not need defending because it has power in itself. When we trust God’s truth instead of circumstances, we can live by faith, peace, and confidence.
Point 1: Truth Stands on Its Own
Key Statement
“When you tell the truth, it doesn’t matter who believes you or not because the truth stands on its own.”
Notes
- Liars desperately want to be believed because their goals depend on deception.
- Truthful people are not controlled by others’ opinions.
- We are not responsible for making people believe the truth.
- Our responsibility is simply to speak the truth.
Application
- Stop arguing to prove yourself.
- Speak truth in love and leave the results to God.
- Peace comes from standing on truth, not winning arguments.
Reflection Question
Am I spending more energy defending myself than simply standing on God’s truth?
Point 2: Truth Is a Gift
Key Statement
“Truth is a gift.”
Notes
- When you speak truth, you give something valuable.
- If someone receives truth, they are blessed.
- If someone rejects truth, they suffer the loss—not you.
- Truth never loses its value because someone refuses it.
Application
- Share biblical truth confidently.
- Don’t feel rejected when people reject truth.
- Remember that truth always carries value.
Reflection Question
How often do I hold back truth because I’m afraid of how people will respond?
Point 3: Truth Brings Freedom
Scripture
John 8:32
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Notes
- Truth liberates.
- Deception enslaves.
- Truth strengthens the spirit.
- Lies create bondage and confusion.
Application
- Freedom begins when we agree with God’s Word.
- Areas where we continue believing lies become areas of bondage.
Point 4: Stop Struggling and Trust God’s Word
Key Statement
“It’s time for us to come to a place where we finally quit struggling and just take God at His Word.”
Notes
- God does not force us to believe Him.
- Faith simply accepts what God says as truth.
- Circumstances should not determine what we believe.
- God’s Word is more reliable than what we see.
Application
Instead of saying:
- “I don’t see it.”
- “Nothing has changed.”
- “Things are getting worse.”
Say:
- “God said it.”
- “I believe it.”
- “That settles it.”
Point 5: Faith Believes Before Seeing
Key Statement
“I don’t have to actually see what I asked God for. I know He doesn’t lie.”
Notes
- Faith is confidence in God’s character.
- Since God cannot lie, His promises are trustworthy.
- Once God speaks, faith receives it immediately.
Application
- Pray once and believe.
- Stop living in anxiety while waiting.
- Rest in God’s faithfulness.
Reflection Question
Do I truly believe God heard me when I prayed?
Point 6: All Things Are Possible to Those Who Believe
Scripture
All things are possible to him who believesAll things are possible to him who believes
Mark 9:23
“If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”
Notes
- Belief unlocks possibilities.
- Faith connects us to God’s power.
- The issue is often not God’s ability but our willingness to believe.
Application
- Replace doubt-filled conversations with faith-filled declarations.
- Refuse to let tomorrow’s circumstances change today’s faith.
Point 7: Hold Fast to What You Believe
Notes
- Don’t let setbacks change your confession.
- Continue believing even when results seem delayed.
- God’s timing is not our timing.
- Faith remains steadfast.
Key Statement
“God is faithful.”
Application
When challenges arise:
- Hold your confession.
- Remember God’s promises.
- Trust God’s timing.
Point 8: God Can Do What You Cannot
Scripture
Mark 10:27
“With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”
Notes
- Human limitations are not God’s limitations.
- What seems impossible financially, physically, or emotionally is possible with God.
- We often judge situations by our resources instead of God’s resources.
Application
Stop saying:
- “I can’t afford it.”
- “I don’t have enough.”
- “There’s no way.”
Start saying:
- “With God, all things are possible.”
